Open Congress means everyone has the right to debate & vote on laws introduced by others. Open Congress means everyone has the right to vote on whether their country should pursue war or seek peace with foreign nations. Open Congress means everyone has the right to vote on the budget requested by the executive branch of the government. Open Congress is only possible in a Direct Democracy. Open Congress, as a software, should be an Open Source platform created by the People and made freely available to any nation wishing to implement Direct Democracy. The core values of transparency, collaboration and participation should be built to the center of the system. Before building the platform, together we should decide how it should work. People maybe upset by politicians in their country, but most are not aware of the existence of an alternative to representative democracy. The current paradigm relies on replacing a group of politicians, with whom people are upset, by another group of politicians who promise a better future. Politicians and the(ir) mainstream media are keeping us within the boundaries of this construct. Time to shift paradigms. Help us raise awareness on the potential of Direct Democracy and Open Congress. Login to submit your ideas and / or challenges in the form of essays, videos, documentaries, artwork... Most countries have a constitution that spells out the representative nature of their democracy. Most of these constitutions were written in times when it was inconceivable to involve more than a few hundred people in the decision making process associated with the suggesting, debating & voting on the laws of a nation. With the advent of internet technologies, everyone of voting age can and should be involved in this decision making process. This is how nations of responsible, engaged and wise citizens are born. The time has come to rewrite the constitutions of our countries to ensure the right of the people to participate, in Direct Democracy, in the legislative process. For such occasion, a constitutional convention would need to be called upon where the People could decide the content of their new constitution. Once the new constitution has been drafted, a popular referendum would be called to validate it. We invite you to participate to an online constitutional convention where the wisdom of the crowd can be the guiding voice for creating a constitution that could be adopted by any nation wishing to switch to Direct Democracy. Evidently, every nation is free to amend the resulting constitution to fit the wishes of its People. Participate in reviewing ideas and challenges submitted by others. Once an agreeable constitution has been drafted, a popular referendum would be the most democratic way to instigate a legitimate switch from representative to Direct Democracy. Only a few countries allow for their citizens to petition to request such referendum. In Europe, popular referendum is possible in Albania, Denmark, Italy, Malta, Russia and Switzerland. In Latin America, the popular referendum exists in Colombia, Uruguay and Venezuela. In the United States, the constitution does not provide for popular referendum at the federal level.
If you live in a country where popular referendum is not available, the first step is to secure the right for the people to ask for a referendum. This can be achieved peacefully via petition. Check if a petition for popular referendum already exists and sign it. Otherwise sign in and start one now.
