Awareness Initiative

People maybe upset by politicians in their country, but most are not aware of the existence of an alternative to representative democracy. The current paradigm relies on replacing a group of politicians, with whom people are upset, by another group of politicians who promises a better future. Politicians and the(ir) mainstream media are keeping us within the boundaries of this construct. Time to shift paradigms. Help us raise awareness on the potential of direct democracy and Open Congress.

In the Canadian federal election of 1988 a majority (52.3%) of people voted for anti-free trade parties but more seats in parliament were won by the pro-free trade party. So disregarding the will of the majority, parliament voted to pass the Canada-U.S. FTA and NAFTA bills. Over 20 years later the trade agreements have had several undesired impacts on the Canadian economy, ecology, resources, and society. In contrast, in a direct democracy, the wish of the majority would always be respected!

The Glass-Steagall Act President Roosevelt signed into law in 1933 was repealed in 1999 by the US Congress. This act prohibited any one institution from acting as any combination of an investment bank, a commercial bank, and/or an insurance company. It was meant to protect the American economy from suffering another great depression. A majority of Republicans and Democrats voted to repeal this safety mechanism. Had the people been asked been asked to vote, would we still be in such a mess?
